Cuba is a sovereign island country of the Caribbean, seated in an archipelago of the Caribbean Sea. The territory is organized into fifteen provinces and a special municipality with Havana as the capital and most populated city. It is one of the thirteen Independent States that form the Insular America, Antilles or Caribbean Island, and one of the thirty-five of the American continent. The island of Cuba has Orogenic origin. The island is completed by the Isla de la Juventud and more than a thousand cays or small islands that surround them: Cayo Coco, Cayo Gullermo, Cayo del Lago del Sur and Cayos Jutias, among others. It is bordered, to the north, by the US state of Florida and the Bahamas, to the west by Mexico and to the south by the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. To the southeast of Cuba, is the island of La Espanola. Since the triumph of the Cuban Revolution (1959), the political system of Cuba has been that of a popular demogra- phy; that is, a conventional socialist state.
